I started a new horticultural course three weeks ago. I was invited to teach a class about herbal medicine and attendance at the course is my reward for doing so. I was intrigued because the course included bio-dynamic growing and electro-culture and I wanted to know more. I am now hooked on bio-dynamics.
Some years ago I had toyed with this method of growing my vegetables but I didn’t really give it enough attention - it makes a huge difference learning it from such a knowledgeable teacher. At its most basic, it is simply observing the moon’s movement through the zodiac. If the moon is in Gemini for example, that is an Air Sign and so we attend to our flowers. If the moon is in Leo for example, that is a Fire Sign and we attend to our fruit. We work with roots whenever the moon is in an Earth Sign and we sow, transplant and harvest our leafy greens when the moon is in a Water Sign.
It is going to take extra work because I will have to organise my days and my tasks more carefully but I feel that all of this ancient knowledge is really just common sense. I also understand that the food will taste better and be more nutritious. Once I get the hang of it, I am sure it will become second nature and it will all get easier.
Do you garden by the moon? Is it working for you? Please let me know how you are getting on with bio-dynamic gardening.
