I have written about the spraying of weed-killers before but I am going into it in a bit more detail in this video as well as offering alternatives to use when controlling weeds.
Terri, you present wonderful information in this video. I have known about the toxic chemicals that are used liberally these days and it makes me sad. We work hard to keep our yard and garden in an organic state. Most -- but not all -- our neighbors do not spray their weeds and we appreciate that. Sad truth is we have no idea what is raining down on us from the sky, due to the "drift" that occurs when someone does spray that toxic stuff.
I just want to add, that I think it is vital for us to try not to contribute to the polluting of our planet. And that one way to show how you feel about the use and danger of use of these products, myself, I find the best way to protest daily, is where I put my dollar. We vote with our dollar, what we approve through it's purchase.
Absolutely, I totally agree. And when spending dollars or punds or euros, always use cash. Insist on cash so that people understand how we can keep our freedom with cash rather than adopting a digital form of money which will led to us being controlled. xx
Yes! We try to use cash as much as we can, of course not always possible. My 'hub' and I are so non-tech-wise, though not technically luddites, close in the case of my husband!
Thanks so much Terri for that vital video. I'm sure you're preaching to the converted here, but we too need reminding of the dangers of wind blown chemicals beyond our control. In the windy Highlands where we lived for many years, and more so here in Galloway we have to be aware when out with the dogs (and for ourselves) of farmers spraying toxins on their land. In some ways we feel helpless, but all I feel I can do is stuff my 'safe' garden with as many flowering plants for the bees and pollinators as I can. It's buzzing out there, wild, beautiful and unruly. As for the weeds I have a lenient eye! My husband moans about the path - so now I'll take it out of his hands.
That is all we can do - be the change and set an example. Hopefully people will notice the lush and fertile gardens we have and start to think or even ask us what it is we are doing differently. xx
This is so important and all great guidance and information. Where I live no one believes any of it. Shelves and shelves of Round up at our local hardware and four wheelers parked everywhere with tanks on the back full of spray. The city sprays without permission or notice around my property line. All my neighbors spray many times a year. It has taken 3 years to convince my two nearest neighbors to let me know when they are going to spray with large trucks and fire hoses, so I can cover all my plants and leave my home while they do it. When I get back the dogs have to stay inside while I water everything down. House for sale so I can find a more intelligent community out of state. So sad. Oddly one of my dogs became very ill at this time and almost died. No vets for 100 miles so I treated her with homeopathic and HERBS. SLIPPERY ELM AND DANDILION SEEMED TO TURN THE CORNER. She did not eat for a week and had diarrhea/vomiting with some blood and I just had to hold her and share healing energy with her. This stuff is deadly.
Oh dear! Tacy keep her on the Dandelion. I just had a comment on YT from a lady whose dog died after being on her father's property (he sprayed all the time). The dog had liver cancer and the vet said it was because of herbicides and pesticides. Still have fingers crossed for you re house xx
Dear Terri, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting this video out there to help alert folks who may not know about the dangers of chemical pesticides. It is so sad to know that our children, pets, wildlife, earth are still being contaminated by these chemicals. Whenever there is a Hazardous Waste collection event here, the workers must wear Hazmat suits to collect your pesticides...doesn't that say a lot?! So many people turn a blind eye to the contaminants and take the "easy seeming way", when its so much easier to use simple safe ways to clear the paths...and you can breathe the fresh air while doing so and not have to worry about getting it on your skin or hurting your loved ones. The earthworms, butterflies, ladybugs, bees...etc... thank you, too! : )
There seems to be some kind of dis-association. Years ago I pointed it all out to a lady, who had given her little girl the weedkiller to carry, and she just growled at me. Wasn't interested in the least and didn't even stop to consider her little child. I don't get it xx
Yikes! : ( I don't get it either. As a good mama bear, I protected and taught my children about these things. Now they are passing on the wisdom as adults. If everyone could do this...the knowledge would spread. That's why I treasure your "Danu's Irish Herb Garden"...you are giving your wisdom to others...xo Thank you
Thank you for reminding folks about NOT using toxic products in their gardens, in their lives, really. So many more things to think of besides just weed elimination. Weeds are far less of a problem than the use of toxins in the environment. And in agriculture, aside from the fact I can't see who would want to eat or drink the products produced, there are the things you spoke of regarding toxic drift to other properties, plus the effects on the bodies of those administering them (if a commercial ag business), or eating and drinking them. Thanks too for listing pet exposure on the list of dangers. Even visiting say public parks where the lawns are sprayed often with weed killers. Bring your dog, have him/her go home and lick their paws, they get it in their systems. Walking on toxic grass then licking themselves is an issue for both dogs and cats, let alone the wild ones. My husband and I never use toxic products on our gardens and yard, and I personally have no understanding for doing so. They've acknowledged "Round-up" as toxic here in the U.S., but it still amazes me how ignorant folks can be, and use it as if it was nothing, no problem. So thanks again, Terri, for giving us something to think about and for those who don't already know, a word to the wise about the dangers of using such products in their environment!
Although I do hope you are preaching to the mostly converted, the possibility you are not and many do not realize, is very real. We live in a somewhat similar minded community, I think, to yours. But you know the old saying, whatever, more or less; no one knows something, until they do. Once you know, you rarely 'unknow'. I think it is pertinent to remind and review important stuff like this. IMHO
All GMO plants contain glyphosate, which is why it's in most childrens urine. Thankfully we finally have people in office here in the USA that are trying to remove the corruption of chemical companies having their employees in government positions to approve these poisons. I do use the same mixture that you do for the weeds in my driveway and patio, and mechanically pull everything else - I've done it that way for years after having seen the damage done to a former coworker who became permanently disabled from a diluted splash on his arm to a chemical that we were told was so safe you could drink it.
My first reaction was, Bravo, Bravo, Terri but then, as you began speaking about your weedKILLERS, I was dismayed. Now, I suppose I have to accept that it is a way of trying to persuade those who cannot learn, that our society still permits the sale of poison to keep the lawn well-groomed. Nature is not well-groomed! What is not beautiful about a lawn covered in Buttercups and Daisies?
A lawn is ONLY beautiful when covered in Daisies, Dandelions and Buttercups. I would never use any form of weed control on a lawn. I am sharing here how to make a natural and safe weed killer for paths and pavements only. Never put anything on the soil itself xx. Hopefully this will make people realise they really don't have to buy the poisons xx
Many thanks for your post. Whilst I have never been a keen gardener as such, I have never wished to use weed killers. Anything I have smelled in the air smells vile.
The pharmaceutical industry has a great deal to answer for in poisoning us in various ways.
As I like anagrams I note Glyphosate can become 'ghastly poe' which I think is very suitable.
And pharmaceutical has the phrase 'Uh a malpractice'.
Great anagrams - so interesting isn't it when they tell us something true which they didn't mean to reveal.. I must share these with your permission xx
Please share away, it's all free, I only searched for what was there all along. If you care to mention my site in passing that is alway welcome, but no obligation whatsoever, it is the truth I want out there.
I hope to complete a post on glyphosate (I have a substantial draft) and trust that it will be in order to mention this post of yours.
Yes, live and let live. Forgive my ignorance as l'm not a gardener. It just occurred to me that pulled out weeds could be used as compost. So, let them grow and harvest them as a beneficial resource for your garden. Your dogs are such good boys, but l missed the cat.
You are right Chris. Nettles and Comfrey are wild plants that are particularly great in the compost or for making liquid feeds, but really anything can be used. All plants return nutrients to the soil xx

I know - it is a secret war tht many people do not realise they are even engaged in xx
