Here in Ireland, and probably elsewhere, the government is working to get more women into politics, to have a gender balance in the halls of power. To achieve this objective all notions of merit and ability are thrown to the winds, numbers are all that matter. (It is possible that this is why Anne Rabbitte was appointed to the Senate even though she was rejected twice by the voters, at both the general and senate elections.) Apparently, (and I have not researched this), working conditions at the Dáil are not conducive to women with children hence the poor response to the government’s public, virtue-signalling desire to have more women in office.
