It is the time of the year to be thinking of tidying up the garden and getting things done. For us, this has coincided with lots of wet weather and the aftermath of Storm Eowyn.
We have decided to have a two year plan to get the garden into a shape that will make it look better, work better for us and be more productive. We have started with some infrastructure - laying paths - to save us from the sea of mud that always occurs during the wet winter months. At the back of the house, my stalled project started two years ago, will also have to be changed. The storm has set back many things. It is as if anything higher than a Daffodil has gone into shock and my herb garden seems to have been wind burned. A great opportunity to move location and start it again.
This is going to be so exciting as I have many ideas and in a way, due to my earlier project stalling, I have an almost clear canvas!
So much wood to process after the storm and after coppicing and we were delighted that our friends came round in a Meitheál to help. A meitheál is a work party or group who come together to help. In the old days, when everyone was part of the community, this would occur at hay making or during calving or raising a house or a roof. It could be anything. Sadly with progress and with the changes in rural life and the mechanisation of farming, meitheáls kind of died out. Since the 2020s though, people have realised that community is what matters and meitheáls have revived. We had 12-14 hours of work in only two hours!! It really broke the back of all that had to be done.
