Bealtaine - Celebrating the Sun

29

To me, as an animist, everything in the universe is alive and sentient - and that includes the sun. Bealtaine is the upcoming festival on the Wheel of the Year and it is one festival when we really give thanks to the sun for providing life here on earth. I remember many years ago in primary school, (television had just begun to be used as a teaching medium) we were watching a series about the ancient Britons. During the re-enactment of a Bealtaine bonfire celebration, the person narrating “explained” that these ancient people did not understand that the sun was just a star, they thought it was god.

I beg to differ. I think those people, our ancestors, were very well aware that the sun was a star. They did not worship the sun as a god, they merely showed respect and huge gratitude for the sun creating life here on earth. Without the sun there would be no life on earth.

The sun affects the earth in multiple ways. Most basically it causes photosynthesis in plants, which is where solar energy is converted into a chemical energy and then stored as glucose. The plants feed us and the animals we also feed on. No sun = no photosynthesis = no food = no life. There are many cycles and rthyms that the sun is involved in, such as the Milankovitch Cycles . These change periodically, regardless of humanity’s actions, so no need to feel any “climate change guilt” - it is not your fault.

The climate is always, and always has been, changing. Previous Global Warming and judging by the number of carbon credits that have been sold, (making some people very rich Al Gore, and allowing some polluters to continue polluting) there is a lot of hypocrisy in the Climate Change movement. Profesor Symes, who is in charge of the UK experiment says,

“Decarbonisation is vital, but our current progress puts us at risk of triggering a large number of temperature-induced climate tipping points.

“This programme will explore critical unanswered questions as to how (or whether) we might cool the Earth safely and responsibly on the timescales required to avoid climate catastrophe."

In a document published by his organisation, ARIA, he refers to the melting of the Artic winter sea ice, loss of the Amazon rainforest (rather ironic that COP30 will be held here Brasil and consequent ecosystem loss, and collapse of the major land-based ice sheets, leading to significant global sea level rises. However, nobody, not even billionaires, knows or understands weather or climate to such an extent to confidently take the steps to experiment with it as we can see this from the dangers of predicting future outcomes.

The sun is life; carbon is life, WE are carbon. I celebrate the sun at each of the eight festivals on the Celtic Wheel of the year, particularly the cross-quarter days such as Bealtaine. Time to grow veg and practise herbal medicine. Have a look at my courses here https://www.danusirishherbgarden.com/hawthorn-academy/ Next Saturday, 3rd May, I will be presenting a talk all about Plantain, at the Linden Conference with Susun Weed. Hopefully, we will all get some good, sunny weather next week as we move towards summer time. Have a great week!xx
